It is believed that March came to us from Byzantium, where it was the first month of the year and was called primidilis - from the word "prima", that is, the first. It was he who opened every new year. He had the same role in Ancient Rome - here at one time the year started from March, which was named after the god of fertility, and later the god of war, Mars. There is an opinion that this month the Romans began preparations for military campaigns - the most successful period for strengthening their lines and fighting the enemy. For this reason, in March it was necessary to glorify the god of war, who was supposed to protect his wards and bestow good luck on them.

In addition, various festivals were held this month in honor of the ancient Roman warriors, and the locals observed the obligatory rituals that would help the fighters. According to another version, March was named after the god Martius, a symbol of a powerful productive force. Most likely, this was due to the beginning of agricultural work, which this god patronized. During this period, it was difficult to do without a productive force. In Etruscan mythology, the name of the god Maris was found, who was the god of wildlife, vegetation and fertility, which comes with the awakening of vital forces. Today we use a variant of the name of this month, which we inherited from Westerners. Whereas in Ancient Rus', March had its own names: dry, solstice and drip. True, they did not take root and gave way to a foreign name.
